One family’s loss was turned into a very helpful gift to a struggling community member, with the Ashland Food Project being a catalyst. A call came into the AFP hotline from a long-time food donor, who had just lost her daughter to cancer, and wanted to know if the AFP could use a supply of Neutrens which is used with a feeding tube.
Larry Chapman, AFP Board member, answering the AFP hotline, told the woman that he wasn’t sure if the Food Bank could use the Nutrens but was sure that he could find a “home” for it. It turns out that the Food Bank was not the best placement for the food but Sally Kirkpatrick, AFP’s new President, suggested that we try La Clinica.
When La Clinica was called, Larry, was directed to Bobbie Mann, the Community Resource Specialist, for the Phoenix branch. Bobbie said that she was sure that she could find a use for the Nutrens. Larry said great and that after he had picked up the supplies, he would call her back to coordinate the delivery. Later that afternoon, when Larry called Bobbi, she said that she could not believe the serendipity!
In calling the clinic’s scheduled cancer patients for outstanding needs, one patient was explaining how much difficulty he was having paying for the high cost of the specialized food for the feeding tube. Obviously, he was elated when Bobbi shared the news of the recent generous donation of 7 cases of Nutrens as well as feeding tube supplies.
